The Sage Owl of Home
Community Project for CB Nuit's After Dark Festival 2022
The community project and sculptural kinetic work titled, "The Sage Owl of Home” centers around the community construction of a large scale, public installation of a three-dimensional owl, his/her feathers and a nest.
First, the public will be invited to contribute to the wing construction by designing their own cardboard feathers, either at home, in classrooms or at the festival. The second part to the community project contributions is to invite the public to a sculptural nest building event at the installation site.
On the day of CB Nuit’s 2022 Festival, the owl will be installed and suspended by rope and pulleys from a branch on a tree in front of the church on West st. Festival night, the Sage Owl will be free to hover over the lawn behind the nest. With the help of a volunteer team pulling on ropes attached to pulleys and the wings, the owl is able to flap his/her wings beside the nest. The head will also have a sway movement enabled by small pulls on attached ropes. The public is then encouraged to hang out in the nest together, create and attach more feathers to the wings and dance an Owl dance!
This year's community project is lead by Megan Holdfast and Zack Turpin... -
